Cause And Effects Of Smog Pollution Environmental Sciences Essay

Cause And Effects Of Smog Pollution Environmental Sciences Essay Smog pollution is a major problem that this planet is suffering from everyday. It has affected our homes, weather, and health. It is a very dangerous situation for us if we do not do anything about it. Smog pollution is caused by chemicals, automobiles, factories and corporations. The greatest thing we can do as a society is try to find a way to help prevent and stop smog pollution. If the people on this planet do not do anything to stop smog pollution we are going to have a BIG problem and it will hurt us in the future. We need a plan and we need to put a stop to smog pollution. The American Lung Association (ALA) has been trying to find ways to help stop and prevent smog pollution from hurting us and the environment. If we can just do our part and find a way to prevent this problem from getting any bigger, it will benefit us all. We all have heard of smog pollution, but do we really know what it is. Smog pollution has many causes that can be hazardous and dangerous to our health and well being. The term smog pollution is also known as photochemical smog. It is formed by the interaction with sunlight with different types of chemicals in earths atmosphere (Oblack). The main component of smog pollution or photochemical pollution is ozone. Ozone is in the earths stratosphere, which the shields the earth from dangerous UV radiation from the sun. The problem with ozone is when it touches down on the earths surface it can be very dangerous and can cause serious health problems for people on the planet (Oblack). The ground level ozone is made by the emissions of automobiles that put nitrogen oxide into the air, which is caused by the vehicles exhaust fumes (Oblack). The organic components from the fumes combined with the ozone and fume evaporation that combines with sunlight, causes smog pollution on the planet (Oblack). Many people try to find ways to help avoid smog in a more planet friendly environment, so some people use substitutes for their everyday use. There is just one problem with that, and that is the sun. Many people dont understand that sunlight and warm climates cause pollution. For example, places like California, Florida, and Arizona and even North America are some of the most polluted places in the country (Oblack). Another problem that causes an increase in smog pollution is the increased usage of fossil fuels for industrial, heating, and of course transportation purposes (All that smog). Also, cutting down, burning trees, and disposing of agricultural and organic waste can also lead to emissions of smog pollution and harmful problems for the planet (All that Smog). Sunlight mixed with different types of dangerous chemicals (se condary pollution) also makes it difficult to stop smog pollution from occurring on the surface of the planet (All that Smog), which creates another big problem. Climate is a major factor for the cause of smog pollution. Many places in the world can try to be more environmental friendly to help save our planet. Some people ride bicycles instead of driving cars. Other people try to reduce their use of using fire to warm themselves. The only problem that these people cannot get away from is something that they cannot control, and that is the sun. California is ranked in the top 10 most polluted areas in the United States. Ozone pollution that is caused by the sun has a major affect on this planet. Smog and air pollution is having a serious impact on the environment and can condemn all ecosystems (seirraclub). The reason why the sun causes so many problems is because the ozone layer that is supposed to protect planet earth is practically destroyed. Without the protection, the sun is able to shine radiation onto the planet and is the main reason for many health issues that people go through every day. Issues like skin cancer, radiation poisoning, and sun burn are having fatal affects on people. This type of pollution not only harms humans, but it can also harm wild life and the environment. Smog can harm different plants, which can lead to damaging consequences. Because the plants are damaged, it makes it hard for plants to make and save food for themselves in their living environment (seirraclub). In addition, the sun and smog can destroy leaves and plants it would make many of the plants vulnerable to getting diseases. And, they cannot defend themselves from different types of bugs and insects that can cause a huge decrease in plant life (seirraclub). Smog pollution is a yearly problem for places like Texas, Georgia, Florida, and many other southern and sunny parts of the world, but there is also a big increase in smog pollution in the summer (seirraclub). This is caused by strong sunlight that burns the earths surface. However, the one thing that is helping smog pollution is all of the problems that are on this planet. A ll of the power plants, automobile emissions, industrial, and chemical vapors are other causes of pollution (seirraclub). Climate changes are part of the problem as well. Within the months of June, July, and August, it makes it harder to try and control the smog pollution, due to the sun. This planet has gone through billions of years of evolution. It survived dinosaurs, the ice age, and the black plague, but because of smog pollution this planet might not be able to survive this new attack. A major problem smog pollution is causing is health concerns for the public. Smog pollution is affecting human health because it is making it harder to breathe the smog induced air. Because of this and sun radiation, this is resulting in many fatalities, including skin and lung cancer. Peoples lungs and hearts can be dangerously affected by smog and air pollution (Oblack). Many people are still skeptical about smog pollution, but one thing that is known is long term exposure can result in dangerous and even fatal heath affects to people (Oblack). Some of the long term affects caused by exposure to smog pollution are problems breathing, coughing, wheezing, pneumonia, bronchitis, inflammation of the pulmonarys, lung cancer, heart problems, asthma like symptoms, pre mature aging of lungs, and last, but not least, death (Oblack). Smog pollution, even in small doses, can be very dangerous and harmful to all people. The American Lung Association estimated that 48 percent of people in the w orld live with very high levels of smog (seirraclub). Even though exposure to smog is dangerous, there are three types of people who can be severely damaged from smog, which include children, the elderly, and people with respiratory problems (seirraclub). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has created the Air Quality Index which lets you check the air density and pollution level around your areas (seirraclub). Furthermore, The Department of Motor vehicles have been trying to develop a plan to reduce vehicle emission and try to improve on air quality for the planet and help save the planet (Malone). The DMV has also been trying to encourage the residents of the United States to help stop smog. They are trying to do their part by asking people to report anyone who has visible exhaust coming out of their automobiles (Malone). If we can all do our fair share and help support this plan we can be able to help stop smog pollution. In all, smog pollution is a major concern for our environment and this planet. If we do not find a way to try and stop smog pollution, we will have many more health problems. Fortunately, there are people who are trying to find ways to stop smog pollution. Many people who are trying to create plans that can help bring this planet back to a healthier state. In 1996, smoking vehicle program was passed that stated that anyone who sees smoking exhaust coming from cars, trucks, or any other motor vehicles were to voluntarily report it to the authorities as a way of preventing polluted air (Malone). It is also there to help educate people about smog pollution and what they can do to help stop it (Malone). The American Lung Association (ALA) also came up with certain help to bring attention to the issue of smog pollution. They advised people to pay more attention to the Air Quality Index (AQI) around their area. They tried to educate people about Ozone action days and how not to ignore them . Finally, ALA attempted to help people get familiar with how smog adversely affects their health (Oblack). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) takes it upon them to check evidence every five years to see whether or not the situation of smog pollution has changed for better or worse (seirraclub). It is very simple to stop smog pollution. We can all use our cars, trucks, and motorcycles, sparingly. We all must try to do our fair share and we must be able to bring awareness to how dangerous the sun can really be. We need to fight back against smog. If we do not do anything about it, this planet and everything on it will suffer. Group against Smog and Pollution (GASP) is a non-profit citizens group in Southwestern Pennsylvania working for a healthy, sustainable environment. GASP was founded in 1969, with a group of volunteers who were worried about air quality issues here in Pennsylvania. GASP has been a diligent watchdog, educator, litigator, and policy-maker on many environment al issues, with a focus on air quality in the Pittsburgh region. Their objective is to teach and enlighten the public about pollution and its remedies. Their Mission Statement is will act to obtain for the residents of Western Pennsylvania clean air, water, and land in order to create a healthy, sustainable environment and quality of life to which we are entitled (Groups against Smog and Pollution.) Obviously GASP is doing their part, but what are we doing as individuals to help?

Academic Achievement

The relationship of academic achievement and self-esteem has been seen in a number of studies. These studies have become the basis of programs and strategies implemented by educators to promote healthy self-esteem in students.Self-esteem and academic achievement have a reciprocal relationship (Marsh and O’Hara, 2008). Some would say that self-esteem might be the cause of academic achievement and those who have a positive view of themselves are focused and motivated to learn. While those with low self-esteem are afraid to take risks, and tends to avoid active participation in classroom and school activities. On the other hand, some presupposes that academic achievement results to increased self-esteem and self-confidence.   No wonder, some teachers invest so much of their time and effort to help build their students' self esteem, while others challenge their students by raising their standards, with little regard of other circumstances affecting their students' performance.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In my opinion, it is not an issue of which of the two strategies is better, but rather, it is more an issue of how a teacher can strike the right balance and timing in implementing the appropriate strategy in motivating his student. Most teachers mean well if they put pressure on their students to perform well at school. But I believe that   a teacher can best demand work from an above average or superior student who, for some reason, lacks the motivation, but is innately competitive. Expecting higher standards from these students is likely to lead to academic achievement, and eventually increase their self-esteem and self-confidence.But not all students belong to this category.   An â€Å"ordinary† student has an â€Å"ordinary† view of himself.   He is less driven and finds competition less appealing. He will tend to view academic pressure placed by a well-meaning teacher as an added source of anxiety. To an ordinary stud ent who is experiencing school adjustment problems for instance, or who happens to be having personal difficulties,   the increased demands from a high-driven teacher is a good excuse for him to withdraw, and worse, to drop-out of school (Flook, 2008).Increasing the self-esteem of an under-motivated student and, working on the lack of   confidence of a low achiever   are two different issues. The challenge for teachers is for them to give an individualized approach in setting the standards for their students. It might be more appropriate to gear the academic pressure to those who are capable of handling the challenge. Meanwhile, they may continue to invest their time and effort in building the self-esteem of those who need it most.Teachers play a significant role in   nurturing the fragile egos of their students and improve their self-concept. It is not only their role to cultivate the intellect, but to provide emotional support and encouragement if the situation calls for i t. This strategy is really a gradual process and the results are not immediately seen. But no effort is wasted for a conscientious teacher. He can see the complete picture . He understands that a student's poor self-concept and low motivation are results of several factors, such as family roles or relationship problems, individual traits and characteristics, among many others.   Because self-perception is attributable to many variables, there is no single formula in addressing the problem of poor self-esteem and self-confidence.An effective teacher however, can see the root cause of the problem and act on it. If it is rooted in low competence, he knows which skills to cultivate. He does not set unrealistically high standards. Better yet, he lets his students set their own standards, but he knows just how to encourage them when they fall short of meeting these standards.Sometimes teachers choose not to accept excuses when their students perform less better than they expect. I still think it depends on the situation. Some students will benefit with a little push, and they are good to go. But pushing the wrong student too hard and at the wrong time might make the situation worse. What if the situation calls for the teacher to go out of his way to address his student's personal difficulties and circumstances?   More important than the grades and the homework are character, relationships and sense of self-worth. Are they not?ReferencesFlook, L. and Fuligni, AJ (2008). Family and School Spillover in Adolescents’ Daily Lives. Child Development Journal, 79 (3).Marsh, H. and O’Mara, A. (2008). The Irregular Plot Pace of Crime and Punishment by Fyodor...

Reflective Statement on Crime and Punishment I first considered exploring the effect of irregular plot pacing and the placement of the murder at the beginning of the novel when I picked â€Å"The Effect of Irregular Plot Pacing† as a literary discussion topic. Now in order to determine the effect of these factors, I had to understand what irregular plot pacing was. Irregular plot pacing is the rhythm of the novel, of the chapters and scenes and paragraphs and sentences. Its also the rate at which the reader reads, the speed at which novel events occur and unfold. Its using specific word choices and sentence structure--scene, chapter, and novel structure--to tap the emotions of the reader so that the reader feels what the writer wants the reader to feel at any given time during the story. Particularly in Crime and Punishment it is referring to the relative time (real time like years, days, weeks†¦etc.) it takes for events to take place compared to the amount of pages and at which speed Dostoevsky unfolds these aforem entioned events. After discovering all of this and analyzing various examples throughout the novel I came to the conclusion that irregular plot pacing can reveal the importance that Rakolnikov, and even Dostoyevsky, places on certain events. It also affects the manner in which the novel is read. For example Dostoevsky took a lengthy twelve pages for Rakolnikov reading of his mother’s letter at the first stages of the novel, when in real time it should have taken

Relationship Between Victor And Frankenstein - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1123 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2019/04/12 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Frankenstein Essay Did you like this example? The next aspect that of the book that is important to my paper is the relationship between Victor and Frankenstein. To understand this, we first must understand each character. Victor is obsessed with the idea of recreating life. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Relationship Between Victor And Frankenstein" essay for you Create order After he fills this obsession, he falls into depression and fear due to how monstrous his creation turned out to be: I took refuge in the courtyard belonging to the house which I inhabited; where I remained during the rest of the night, walking up and down in the greatest agitation, listening attentively, catching and fearing each sound as of it were to announce the approach of the demoniacal corpse to which I had so miserably given life(Shelley, 36). He returns home after leaving school, only to find that tragedy had followed him home. He then dedicates the rest of his life to destroying his creation, the very thing that fueled his curiosity and love for alchemy. Victors character reveals his internal romanticism, despite his obsession with the unnatural and synthetic life. Victors ambitions and desires emphasize aspects of romanticism. Victors dream to discover are shown in his childhood ideals: The world was to be a secret which I desired to divine. Curiosity, earnest research to learn the hidden laws of nature are among the earliest sensations I can remember(Shelley, 18). The Romantic viewpoint of innocent childhood dreams and thoughts before corruption can be seen throughout Victors tale, as well as his regret and horror at his ambitions corruption. Victors interest in alchemy and his goals to alter nature itself forecasts his godlike opinion of himself and his abilities. In the novel, Victor proclaims, By one of those caprices of the hand, which we are perhaps most subject to in early youth, I at once set down natural history which could never even step within the threshold of real knowledge(Shelley, 22), which can be connected back to the corruption of youth, as well as Victors elevated sense of his social superiority. Shelley emphasizes the dangers of alchemy and going against nature and by using Victors character as a symbol of the horrors and dangers of the unnatural and all views considered unromantic. With this being said, we cannot ignore the other aspects of Victors character that relate to a Gothic background, seeing as this paper is not dismissing of either genre. Key aspects of a Gothic protagonist that can be seen in Victor are: an absolute goal or aim, links to the supernatural, and a tragic flaw. The first two are relating back to his love and curiosity of alchemy and his drive to create life. His tragic flaw, which is his ambition and God-complex, create his downfall and depressive state. Victor is his own downfall. Though the two genres work hand in hand for some of Victors character traits, Romantic ideals and characteristics more heavily impact his structure and roots. As for Frankenstein, he is chased and feared by society and denied by his creator, Victor. This denial causes the monster to commit murder on Victors family, causing the chase between the two. Frankenstein can be seen as a Romantic hero because of the rejection he faces from society. Wherever he goes, he is chased away because of his hideous appearance and his huge size. Shelley uses this to show readers how many people in conventional society reject the less than average who live on the borders of our society. Shelley uses her writing to get a sympathetic response for a creature so misunderstood from the reader: The human senses are insurmountable barriers to our union. If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear. (Shelley 173). The monster tries to fit into a regular community, but because he is hideous to look at and does not know the social standards, he can never become part of mainstream society. Frankenstein tries to overcompensate for his lack of knowledge and isolates himself, except for when contact is necessary. Shelley also connects Frankenstein and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner several times in her novel to relate her misguided monster with Coleridges ancient Mariner, like in chapter 5 where Victor quotes, Like one, on a lonesome road who, Doth walk in fear and dread, And, having once turned round, walks on, And turns no more his head; Because he knows a frightful fiend Doth close behind him tread(Shelley, 36). Shelley intentionally relates her novel to one of the most genuine Romantic works and uses references all throughout her novel. Moving forward to examine the relationship between monster and creator, the characters seem to bridge the mortal world and the supernatural world. The Frankenstein monster seems to have a form of communication between himself and his creator, because the monster appears wherever Victor goes. The monster also moves with amazing speed, matching Victor in speed in the chase towards the North Pole. Thus, this aspect of relationship is gothic. Another important aspect of this relationship which falls under Romantic is the God-Adam roles they have. Religion is something that will be more heavily focused on later. Frankenstein is the Adam of this story and Victor is God. In the novel, Frankenstein comes across the Bible, reads the story in Genesis and compares himself to Adam. He is created by his master as a fulfillment of purpose and dream, only to be cast aside. The temptations of the real world overcome him. For Victor, it is not satisfying enough to study philosophy and science and follow a respectable profession, he must perfect the role of the scientist by attempting to accomplish the impossible, a process which is inevitably flawed due to the fact that overstepping human boundaries has significant consequences. Shelleys Frankenstein is not a mad scientist but a scientist who is passionate about the first questions of his time. In his Romantic search for scientific ideal, the perfect human, he creates a monster, who is held in check by systems that humans have created. While these systems are more concrete and based in reality than the creation of the monster, they are equally imperfect. In a twist on the typical romantic text, which, ends on a thoughtful, meditative note, this novel ends with the characters having effected no significant resolution amongst themselves. They have all realized the impossibility of striving against the roles which they have been given in life, and they do not seem to be able to identify any other options for themselves. While this novel is a good example of the romantic period in that it uses a highly stylized and dramatized frame, more focused on the ideas of the fantastic and mystical than those of the real, the story becomes an allegory for very real emotions and struggles with which romantic writers were deeply preoccupied.
